Corona started in 1886, when five founders formed the South Riverside Land and Water Company and bought about 12,000 acres from the Yorba family. Engineer Hiram Clay Kellogg drew the townsite inside a circular road, Grand Boulevard, 2.75 miles around, which hosted road races from 1913 to 1916. Residents voted in 1896 to incorporate under the name Corona, and by 1916 it was known as the Lemon Capital of the World. Victorian and Craftsman houses still face the boulevard, while Sierra del Oro, Eagle Glen and Dos Lagos spread across the hills and canyons to the south and west. How far a house sits from the circle says a lot about what its closets need.
Corona homes and what they mean for storage
- Grand Boulevard: Victorian, Craftsman and revival homes from the 1880s to the 1940s, with small closets and awkward corners under stairs and rooflines. Reach-ins measured to fit their exact shape, with double hang and a narrow drawer tower, use space a standard rod leaves empty.
- Sierra del Oro: a planned community adopted in 1985 that mixes hillside estates with townhomes, patio homes and condos. In the attached homes every foot of closet counts, so shelving and drawers are sized to the exact depth and width.
- Eagle Glen: detached homes around an 18-hole course that opened in 1999, where golf bags, carts and sports gear compete with the cars. Garage cabinets and overhead storage give each set of clubs and gear a fixed spot.
- Dos Lagos: detached, zero-lot-line and patio homes around two lakes formed in an old quarry, where side yards are narrow and there is little room for a shed. The garage takes on that job, so wall cabinets and a workbench keep it usable.
About half of Corona's homes were built in the 1980s and 1990s, so many closets still have the rod and shelf they came with. Replacing them with adjustable components, drawers and shoe shelving gets more out of the same footprint without any construction.
