About Chula Vista

Chula Vista's story starts in 1868, when the Kimball brothers bought land that had been part of the Rancho de la Nacion. In 1887 five-acre lots went on sale, each with a requirement to build a home, and the new town took a name that roughly means beautiful view. Voters approved incorporation in October 1911. On the west side about two thirds of the housing was built before 1980, while on the east side more than nine in ten homes were built since, so the two halves of the city ask different things of a closet.

Chula Vista homes and what they mean for storage

  • Third Avenue and Castle Park: the commercial and civic core after incorporation in 1911, with Castle Park subdivided in the 1920s. Houses from that period have modest closets, so a rod above a rod, a drawer stack and shelving to the ceiling make better use of each opening.
  • Mid-century tracts: Bay Manor from 1942, Kenwood Village from 1948 and Pepper Tree Lane, which added about 1,200 homes after 1952, were built so uniformly that the city's historic survey treats them as neighbourhoods rather than single houses. Where every house on a street shares a floor plan, the same small closet repeats, and a fitted layout helps house after house.
  • Eastlake: a master-planned community developed from the late 1980s and 1990s, with roughly 8,000 homes, schools, parks and a golf course, according to its planning engineers. Primary suites in homes of that generation usually include a walk-in, so the work is turning builder shelving into a full layout with drawers, hanging at two heights and a shoe section.
  • Otay Ranch: the newest master-planned villages, begun in 1999 and organised around town centres, with single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and apartments side by side. In a townhome or condo the closets and garage are smaller than in a detached house, so each one is fitted right up to the ceiling.

The average Chula Vista household is about 3.2 people, which means a lot of comforters, pillows and spare sheets. Bedding is bulky, and deep closet shelves with lidded bins below the hanging rod give it a place that is not the top of a wardrobe.
