Burbank carries the name of Dr. David Burbank, a Los Angeles dentist who in 1867 bought more than 9,000 acres from Rancho San Rafael and Rancho La Providencia and ran sheep and wheat on them. He sold the railroad a right of way in 1874, the first train came through in 1876, and on May 1, 1887 the townsite opened for sale with a water system to irrigate new orchards. The city incorporated in 1911 with about 500 residents and put a cantaloupe on its first seal. Magnolia Park, laid out in the 1920s beside a dairy farm, the horse-keeping Rancho district and the Verdugo foothills now give the city three very different kinds of house.
Burbank homes and what they mean for storage
- Magnolia Park: a tract laid out around 1923 whose homes mostly date from the 1940s, with modest bedroom closets that were never meant for today's wardrobes. A fitted reach-in with drawers, shoe shelves and two rods holds what used to need a dresser and an armoire.
- Rancho Equestrian District: single-family homes on lots zoned for horses, where the stable must stand in the rear 35 feet and takes much of the yard. With less outdoor space for sheds, the house closets and the garage take on more, so they are planned to hold riding gear, garden tools and household overflow in separate zones.
- Hillside homes in the Verdugo foothills: streets subdivided from 1926 and mostly built out by the 1970s, with many houses on steep lots, graded pads or caissons. Stairs and changes in level leave sloped and odd-shaped closets, which are measured on site and fitted shelf by shelf.
About three in four owner-occupied Burbank homes were built before 1960, and many of their closets sit behind a pair of sliding doors that only ever open half the closet at a time. Placing the most-used clothes in the middle, with drawers and shoes at the ends, means the whole closet is reachable from either side.
